Making of a mechanical whale.
This video shows the making of a mechanical moving whale in wood (also called automaton).
I’ve named him Wooden Migaloo after the albino humpback whale often seen on the coasts of Australia. Migaloo is an Aboriginal word meaning “white boy”.
I made this kinetic sculpture in my workshop in the south of France near Toulouse. The whale and the waves are made of basswood, the frame is walnut and the base is acacia.
It takes around 50 hours for me to finish one Wooden Migaloo.
To make this video show multiple angles, I had to film myself crafting 4 of these sculptures. I had more than 15 hours of rushes to sort and edit. I hope you’ll enjoy watching it.
